The United States President, Joe Biden, issued an executive order on October 30th to establish new standards for artificial intelligence (AI) safety and security. The order aims to build upon previous AI safety commitments made by 15 leading companies in the industry.
The new standards outlined in the executive order include six primary points:
In addition to these standards, the executive order also emphasizes the importance of protecting consumer privacy and citizens’ privacy practices. The President has officially called on Congress to pass bipartisan data privacy legislation to support the development and research of privacy techniques and technologies.
The order also highlights the administration’s plans for involvement with AI regulations worldwide, including the recent agreement on a voluntary code of conduct for AI developers by the G7 countries. Moreover, within the government itself, clear standards will be released to “protect rights and safety, improve AI procurement, and strengthen AI deployment,” with AI training provided for all relevant government employees.
The Biden administration is also focused on advancing equity and civil rights in AI, employing the responsible use of AI to benefit consumers, and monitoring the technology’s impact on the job market, among other social-related topics.
