Elon Musk recently announced that xAI would be open sourcing its AI model Grok, amidst an ongoing lawsuit against rival AI chatbot developer OpenAI.
In a March 11 post, Musk revealed that Grok would become open source starting from this week. Although he didn’t delve into specifics, the response to his announcement was largely positive, with users commending him for the decision.
The move comes in the midst of a legal battle initiated by Musk against OpenAI on Feb. 29, alleging a breach of agreement made during OpenAI’s inception as a nonprofit organization. Musk argues that OpenAI’s partnership with Microsoft contradicts its initial commitment to advancing open-source artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the benefit of humanity.
Despite Musk’s lawsuit, OpenAI executives revealed emails suggesting Musk’s prior agreement with the company’s shift to a for-profit entity. This revelation occurred shortly after Musk filed the lawsuit. Moreover, OpenAI reinstated CEO Sam Altman to its board, acknowledging the destabilizing impact of his departure in November 2023.
Musk’s decision to open source Grok aligns with his pursuit of advancing open-source AGI for humanity’s benefit, as highlighted in his lawsuit against OpenAI.
Grok, developed by xAI, is an AI chatbot similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. However, Grok stands out for its ability to access real-time information via the X social media platform and address contentious topics. While Grok, powered by the Grok-1 large language model, outperforms ChatGPT-3.5 in some aspects, it falls short of OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 model.
Accessing Grok requires a verified X account, offering users a platform to engage with the AI chatbot and leverage its capabilities.
