Microsoft has unveiled a significant investment of $2.1 billion in Spain, aiming to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud infrastructure over the next two years. Brad Smith, the company’s vice chair and president, made the announcement following a meeting with Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.
Smith emphasized that Microsoft’s investment goes beyond constructing data centers; it’s a commitment to supporting Spain’s security, development, and digital transformation across various sectors, including government, businesses, and individuals.
Highlighting Microsoft’s longstanding presence in Spain spanning 37 years, Smith underscored the company’s dedication to fostering talent and innovation in the digital sector. This investment builds upon Microsoft’s previous initiatives, such as establishing an R&D hub for AI technologies in Barcelona in September 2021.
In addition to its commitment to Spain, Microsoft recently announced a $3 billion investment in Germany to bolster its AI ecosystem. Over the next two years, Microsoft plans to allocate these funds to enhance AI infrastructure, establish new data centers, and provide AI skills training.
Microsoft’s investment in Spain and Germany reflects a broader trend of Big Tech companies ramping up their AI-related investments in Europe. This surge comes as the European Union prepares to implement its EU AI Act legislation, signaling the continent’s growing importance in the global AI landscape.
Coinciding with Microsoft’s initiatives, France and Google have announced plans to establish an AI-dedicated hub in Paris, accommodating hundreds of researchers and engineers. Google’s “AI Opportunity Initiative for Europe” further demonstrates the tech giant’s commitment to fostering AI skills training across the continent.
