OpenAI, the organization behind the renowned ChatGPT chatbot, recently published a blog post detailing its strategy for the 2024 global elections.
The primary focus is on ensuring transparency, improving access to reliable voting information, and preventing the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI). OpenAI emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the collaborative essence of elections and is committed to ensuring that its AI services do not compromise this process.
The company acknowledges that maintaining election integrity is a collective responsibility and is dedicated to ensuring that its technology does not disrupt this process.
OpenAI states, “Our goal is to ensure that our AI systems are developed, implemented, and utilized safely. As with any emerging technology, these tools offer both advantages and challenges.” The company has established a specialized, cross-functional team to address election-related issues, particularly focusing on preventing abuses such as deceptive deepfakes, chatbots impersonating political figures, and large-scale influence operations. One of its preventive measures includes configuring Dall-E to reject requests for generating images of real individuals, including political candidates.
In August 2023, U.S. regulators considered implementing regulations on political deepfakes and AI-generated ads in anticipation of the 2024 presidential elections.
OpenAI has currently prohibited the use of its applications for political campaigning and lobbying. Notably, a U.S. Congressional candidate is already using AI for campaign calling to expand voter outreach. The AI developer is also continually updating ChatGPT to provide timely, accurate news from around the world and guide voters to official websites for further information.
The impact of AI on elections has been a significant topic of debate. Microsoft released a report discussing the potential of AI on social media to influence voter opinions.
Microsoft’s Bing AI chatbot faced scrutiny after researchers in Europe discovered it providing inaccurate election information.
Google has taken a proactive approach regarding AI and elections. In September, it mandated AI disclosure in political campaign ads and restricted responses to election-related inquiries on its Bard AI tool and generative search features.
