Two days after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella appointed former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to lead a new advanced artificial intelligence (AI) research team, OpenAI reversed its decision to part ways with its co-founder.
On November 22, OpenAI announced a renewed agreement that would see Altman return as CEO. This development was confirmed through a post on the company’s official X (formerly Twitter) account. OpenAI mentioned that it is working with Altman to finalize the details of this arrangement. Altman echoed his commitment to rejoin OpenAI by sharing the announcement with a heart emoji, indicating his affection for the organization.
Altman expressed his enthusiasm about returning to OpenAI, emphasizing his dedication to the company and its ongoing partnership with Microsoft. He stated, “I’m looking forward to returning to OpenAI, and building on our strong partnership with Microsoft.”
Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, showed support for Altman and OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman’s decision to return to OpenAI. Nadella highlighted the importance of ensuring OpenAI’s continued success and adherence to its mission.
Altman’s brief exit from OpenAI underscored his significant role in uniting the team. On November 20, a substantial portion of OpenAI’s workforce, with 505 out of 700 employees, reportedly signed a letter criticizing the board’s decision to dismiss Altman. The letter argued that this move compromised the company’s mission and integrity, stating, “The process through which you terminated Sam Altman and removed Greg Brockman from the board has jeopardized all of this work and undermined our mission and company.”
The strong reaction from OpenAI employees, coupled with Microsoft’s prompt job offer to Altman, underscored his influential position within the AI industry.
