Coinbase’s blockchain platform, Base, has recently formed a partnership with Sound.xyz, a blockchain music platform. Announced on December 19, this collaboration enables artists to create and mint their music as nonfungible tokens (NFTs) within the Base ecosystem.
In a statement on X (previously known as Twitter), Sound.xyz highlighted the advantages of using Base, an Ethereum layer 2 solution, for minting music NFTs. The platform emphasized the reduced gas fees and faster transaction speeds offered by Base. These features not only make the minting process more efficient but also simplify it for artists, allowing them to upload and withdraw their work without needing to buy cryptocurrency or bridge funds.
The inaugural track to be minted on Base is a blockchain-inspired song titled “Based,” by artists Reo Cragun and Heno. The song’s lyrics, which include lines like “We’re bringing a billion on-chain,” reflect the theme of resilience and commitment in the blockchain community.
Sound.xyz pointed out a major advantage of this partnership: the potential to engage over 100 million users on the Base network. The platform views music as an ideal gateway for introducing a new generation to blockchain technology.
The integration of the music industry with Web3 has been gaining momentum over the past year. Major players in the traditional music scene are experimenting with blockchain-based releases, indicating a growing interest in this new technology.
For instance, the renowned American thrash metal band Megadeth launched a new NFT collection in early December, offering their fans novel ways to interact in both the physical and digital realms.
In a groundbreaking move, the first-ever studio demo by the late pop icon Michael Jackson was released on the blockchain as digital vinyl through Anotherblock. This release came five decades after the recording and 14 years posthumously.
In November, Cointelegraph interviewed Cordell Broadus (Champ Medici), entrepreneur and son of the legendary rapper Snoop Dogg. Broadus discussed the challenges and strategies involved in introducing established artists to Web3 and how blockchain and NFTs can be leveraged to shape the future of music.
