Amazon and the AI startup Anthropic have disclosed a new investment partnership aimed at boosting the research and development of advanced foundation models.
In a message on X (previously known as Twitter), Anthropic shared that Amazon is investing $4 billion into their operations, granting them access to Amazon Web Services Trainium and Inferentia chips in the process.
In exchange, Anthropic will enhance the support of Amazon Bedrock, which generates foundation models. It promises secure model customization and fine-tuning for businesses, with Amazon teams also being granted the ability to expand on Anthropic’s models through Bedrock. Moreover, Amazon will reportedly acquire a “minority stake” in Anthropic. The startup has confirmed that this will not impact its governance structure. Anthropic was established by ex-members of the Microsoft-backed OpenAI, the entity behind the widely recognized AI chatbot, ChatGPT.
This announcement arrives on the heels of a significant investment in Anthropic. In August, South Korean telecommunication titan SK Telecom invested $100 million in the startup. This investment was accompanied by a collaboration between the two organizations to create a multilingual large language model for SK Telecom’s Telco AI Platform.
Anthropic has actively participated in substantial initiatives within the AI sector. In July, it teamed up with tech giants like Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft to launch the “Frontier Model Forum,” a group dedicated to internal self-regulation of AI development. Additionally, it has been involved in U.S. government-led projects focusing on AI development, regulation, and a cybersecurity challenge to fortify its “critical infrastructure.”
