The Recording Academy, which oversees the Grammy Awards, has clarified that AI-generated music will be eligible for awards starting in 2024. According to Harvey Mason, the CEO and president of the Recording Academy, AI or music that contains AI-created elements can be considered for Grammy nominations.
However, the Academy will not give a Grammy or nomination to the AI portion of the track itself. If an AI voice model performs lead vocals on a track, for example, it could be eligible in the songwriting category but not in the performance category, and vice versa.
The Academy emphasizes that human contributions will always be considered as long as they are meaningful and greater than the AI’s contribution.
The Recording Academy updated its rules and eligibility criteria on June 28 to specify that a work that contains no human authorship is not eligible in any Grammy categories. The decision to include AI-generated music in the awards comes after the industry has witnessed the increasing prevalence of AI technology in music production. Some artists, such as Grimes, have embraced AI and even offered to share royalties with creators who use her voice track in a successful song.
However, rapper Ice Cube has expressed concerns about AI, calling it demonic and stating that he would sue anyone mimicking his voice on AI tracks and the platforms hosting such songs.
The Recording Academy has been actively considering how to incorporate AI in music and recently held a summit with industry leaders to discuss the future of AI in the music industry. With the growing use of AI in music production, it is anticipated that the technology will play a significant role in many records and songs in the coming years.
