Fejiro Hanu, CEO of Nigerian crypto exchange Patricia, has refuted rumors of the platform’s closure, dismissing them as sensationalist media tactics aimed at generating clicks. Hanu confirmed that Patricia is operational and continues to serve its users.
In a post on X, Hanu criticized media outlets for distorting the narrative surrounding Patricia. Despite providing interviews and information, he claimed that media houses sensationalized the story to attract attention, often at the expense of accuracy.
Patricia faced scrutiny following a hacking incident in May 2023, resulting in a substantial loss of customer funds. Despite assurances of fund security, users encountered difficulties accessing their assets since April 2023, sparking concerns of a potential exit scam.
In response to user concerns, Patricia converted customer assets into its native Patricia Token (PTK) in October 2023, ensuring future repayment. PTK serves as an internal token representing debt and is managed by the company.
Patricia is committed to reimbursing holders with 1 Tether (USDT) token for each Patricia token, facilitating asset recovery post-breach. Hanu reassured users that Nigerian security services are actively addressing the situation, awaiting prosecution and conviction of the suspects involved.
In November 2023, Nigerian Police Force arrested politician Wilfred Bonse in connection with the Patricia crypto wallet heist. Bonse faced charges including criminal conspiracy, unauthorized alteration of computer systems, and illicit diversion of funds, highlighting efforts to address the case.
Hanu’s statement aims to clarify Patricia’s operational status amidst ongoing media scrutiny and reassure users of the platform’s commitment to integrity and asset recovery. The arrest in connection with the heist underscores efforts to address security breaches within the crypto space.
