The decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) governing ApeCoin has faced criticism from community members regarding what they perceive as “insane” salaries paid to the organization’s leadership. An organizational chart published on Twitter by the ApeCoin DAO secretary revealed salaries ranging from $7,000 to $75,000 per month for the leadership positions. This sparked inquiries and backlash from the community.
One community member expressed astonishment at the salaries and questioned the value provided by the “special council” members who were earning $20,000 per month. Another member mentioned that while certain roles may justify higher compensation, the amounts being paid for moderating a forum and supervising seemed excessive.
Community members characterized the salaries as out of touch and accused decision-makers of being disconnected from reality. In response, an ApeCoin DAO board member defended the compensation, stating that it reflects the responsibilities and liabilities associated with the roles. They argued that the crypto and Web3 industries carry significant risks and liabilities, which justify higher compensation. The board member compared the roles to executives in mid-cap companies who receive similar rates.
When asked about the qualifications of those earning $20,000 per month, the board member acknowledged that not all of them have typical backgrounds seen in public board director positions. However, they emphasized that DAOs offer opportunities for individuals with diverse backgrounds to excel in their roles.
