The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Richmond, a city south of Vancouver, has issued a public warning about a possible trend of high-value cryptocurrency investors being targeted and robbed in their own homes. The warning came on July 19 after several similar incidents involving cryptocurrency investors were reported in the area over the last 12 months.
According to the RCMP, the perpetrators impersonate delivery drivers before robbing the victims in each case. The suspects seem to have knowledge of the victims’ heavy investments in cryptocurrency and know their home addresses.
The police department has made one arrest in connection with the incidents but has not confirmed if they are linked. Specific details about the incidents and the amount of cryptocurrency stolen were not disclosed as investigations are ongoing.
To avoid falling victim to such robberies, the RCMP advised not allowing strangers or delivery people into the household and instead requesting deliveries to be left outside. If in doubt, individuals should call the delivery company to confirm the person’s identity and contact authorities if they feel danger is imminent. Valuables and financial information should be kept securely, such as in a safe box.
The police also recommended discussing financial matters privately, avoiding sharing such information on social media, and only confiding in trusted individuals.
This warning comes after a notable incident in March, where Aiden Pleterski, Canada’s self-proclaimed “Crypto King,” was allegedly kidnapped, falsely imprisoned, and assaulted by individuals who fell for an apparent cryptocurrency scheme from Pleterski. One of the men, who invested 740,000 Canadian dollars ($560,000) in the scheme, was charged with kidnapping Pleterski in July 2023.
