Social media platform Twitter has announced temporary limits on the number of posts users can read daily, citing concerns over extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation. Executive chairman Elon Musk stated that verified accounts will be limited to 10,000 posts per day, while unverified and new unverified accounts will be capped at 1,000 and 500 posts per day, respectively.
Users have reported issues such as the inability to retrieve tweets and missing timelines, leading to hashtags like #TwitterDown and #TwitterFail trending in certain regions. The cause of the data scraping and system manipulation was not specified, but Musk mentioned that the excessive pillaging of data was degrading the platform’s service.
There have been suggestions that web-browsing-enabled AI chatbots, such as OpenAI’s GPT-4, may be responsible for the extreme data scraping. Twitter imposes rate limits on its API to manage the volume of requests, ensuring a reliable and scalable platform for developers.
Co-founder and former CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, defended the recent moves, acknowledging the challenges of running Twitter and stating that the decision was likely made for the greater good of the platform. He expressed interest in seeing Twitter transition to a truly censorship-resistant open protocol, similar to Bitcoin and Nostr.
In unrelated news, Musk appears to be training for a potential mixed martial arts cage fight with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg outside of his professional obligations.
