The crypto community is stepping up to support the People’s Fund of Maui, a relief fund initiated by celebrities Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to aid those affected by the wildfires in Maui, Hawaii.
In August 2023, wildfires ravaged over 2,500 acres on the Hawaiian island, resulting in significant property and personal losses. To provide direct financial assistance to those impacted, Oprah and The Rock established the People’s Fund of Maui. The Rock confirmed via Twitter that all donations would be directed to the victims, stating that every adult resident displaced by the wildfires in Lahaina and Kula would be eligible to receive $1,200 per month during the recovery period.
The fund accepts donations in various fiat currencies as well as cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and Dogecoin (DOGE), among others. Oprah explained that the aim of directly distributing donations to survivors is to empower them to make decisions for themselves and their families during the recovery process.
In addition to the efforts of celebrities, other relief organizations, such as All Hands and Hearts, are also collecting donations in both fiat and cryptocurrency to support the local Maui community affected by the fires.
Olga Ruggiero, Chief of Organizational Integration and Events at All Hands and Hearts, highlighted the importance of cryptocurrency donations, stating that they, like any other donations, are crucial in providing essential support after the devastating wildfires. She also noted the ongoing collaboration within the crypto industry to support global communities in need.
