The official social media account of the Spanish embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina has raised eyebrows with its recent activity. The account was observed engaging with various cryptocurrency projects, inquiring about airdrops, upgrades, and launchpads. This unusual behavior, which included a now-deleted post asking “Wen Jupiter Snapshot?” in response to a memecoin page, has led to speculation that the account may have been compromised.
The embassy’s account didn’t just stop at one query; it also reached out to the gaming blockchain network BEAM, asking about details of its launchpad. Additionally, it interacted with Hex founder Richard Heart, pressing for information about the Pulsechain launchpad.
In total, 41 crypto-related comments were reportedly made from the embassy’s account in a 24-hour period, targeting various projects like De.Fi 2.0, Dymension, Frame, Monad, Router Protocol, Phantom, SatoshiVM, and StarHeroes.
Many of these posts have since been deleted, with 20 responses still visible at the time of reporting. The situation has been met with a mix of humor and curiosity among social media users. One user, “LeonBlockchain,” noted the absence of phishing links in the posts, suggesting that it might not be a typical account hack. The user humorously commented on the presence of a “degen” (slang for a reckless investor in the crypto community) in the Spanish embassy.
As of now, the Spanish embassy has not confirmed whether its account was indeed hacked. Notably, the account had no history of sharing crypto-related comments before January 29.
We reached out to the Embassy of Spain in Bosnia and Herzegovina for comments but has yet to receive a response. This incident adds to a growing list of high-profile social media hacks, including the recent compromise of the United States SEC’s account, which was used to disseminate false information about a Bitcoin ETF approval following a SIM swap attack. The situation underscores the vulnerability of official accounts to cyberattacks and the potential for misinformation in the digital space.
