Ethereum developers are gearing up to finalize a launch date for the Dencun upgrade, with a significant meeting scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 8. This upgrade is poised to introduce critical Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), notably proto-danksharding, which promises to significantly lower transaction fees on layer-2 solutions.
Tim Beiko, a core Ethereum developer, shared an optimistic update on Reddit on Feb. 1, noting the successful testing of the Dencun upgrade. The developers’ team is encouraged by the recent Sepolia fork on Jan. 30 and is looking forward to the Holesky testnet upgrade on Feb. 7. Beiko mentioned that, pending positive outcomes, a mainnet launch date would be determined in the next All Core Developers Call (ACDC), slated for late next week.
The Dencun upgrade, following the Shapella upgrade from April 12, 2023, introduces significant changes to Ethereum’s consensus and execution layers. This upgrade is crucial for Ethereum’s evolution, enhancing its scalability and efficiency, particularly in reducing transaction costs on layer-2 networks through proto-danksharding.
Proto-danksharding, a key feature of the Dencun upgrade, is set to revolutionize Ethereum’s scalability by making data availability cheaper. This is achieved through the introduction of “blobs,” a new type of data container that facilitates the cost-effective processing of rollups. Rollups, which batch transactions and data off-chain before submitting them to the Ethereum blockchain, stand to benefit significantly from reduced costs, making Ethereum transactions more efficient and affordable.
Christine Kim, Vice President of Research at Galaxy Digital, estimates an 80% chance of the Dencun mainnet activation by the end of March, with a possibility of an earlier launch by the end of February, although she believes the likelihood of this is around 40%. The successful activation of Dencun on the Goerli testnet on Jan. 17 has already showcased the potential benefits of the included EIPs, such as EIP-4844, which enables proto-danksharding.
The Ethereum community eagerly awaits the Dencun upgrade, anticipating the benefits it will bring to the network’s scalability and transaction efficiency. With the mainnet launch date decision on the horizon, the upgrade represents a significant step forward in Ethereum’s ongoing development, promising to enhance the user experience and attract more adoption by making transactions more affordable.
