Investors in both the crypto and stock markets have often sought unconventional methods to try to predict market fluctuations, ranging from precognitive dreaming to consulting artificial intelligence chatbots. In Thailand, a growing number of investors are turning to astrology and divine powers to forecast market movements, including those in the cryptocurrency space, as recently discussed in a Reddit thread on r/cryptocurrency.
One notable astrologer, “Pimfah,” manages a Facebook group with over 160,000 members where participants seek and exchange tarot card readings, with some individuals specifically inquiring about what their readings might signify for the crypto market. Another self-proclaimed fortune teller, Ajarn Ton, operates a YouTube channel with nearly 26,000 subscribers, featuring numerous videos where he attempts to predict cryptocurrency prices using astrology.
Ton’s most recent prediction focuses on the collapsed crypto Terra Luna Classic (LUNC), suggesting it could experience a surge of nearly 50,000% to reach $0.029, even though it’s currently trading at less than $0.000055. Occasionally, these predictions have proven somewhat accurate, such as a notable fortune teller named Mor Plai who forecasted a crypto market recovery starting in November 2022, which turned out to be somewhat accurate, notwithstanding the crypto turmoil surrounding FTX’s collapse.
Some skeptics on the Reddit post expressed doubt about the credibility of these prediction methods, with one Redditor remarking that “Put out enough vague predictions, and you gotta be right eventually.” Others humorously noted that even if a hamster can outperform many adults, astrology might be worth a try.
While such spiritual beliefs may attract skepticism in Western countries, they are not considered unusual in Thailand, a nation with a Buddhist-majority population. A September Pew Research report indicated that just over 80% of surveyed Thais believe in God, deities, or spirits, and nearly half believe in the influence of spells, curses, or other forms of magic on people’s lives.
Interestingly, even in parts of the Western world, self-proclaimed astrologers have attempted to use celestial signals to predict cryptocurrency price movements. For instance, during the 2021 crypto bull market, TikTok astrologer Maren Altman gained a large following for her astrology-based Bitcoin price predictions. Dutch-born Bitcoin enthusiast Didi Taihuttu, known as the “Bitcoin family” patriarch, uses a homebrew market indicator that considers moon cycles alongside trading data to identify buy and sell opportunities for Bitcoin.
Some Redditors speculated that there could be an indirect relationship between astrology and prices, as belief in such methods might lead traders to “act accordingly,” potentially causing a shift in prices through a self-fulfilling prophecy.
As for the future of Bitcoin, the pseudonymous crypto-focused astrologer “Crypto Damus” suggested in an October 18 post on X (Twitter) that the alignment of Mars in a favorable sextile with Bitcoin’s natal Mars, along with Mercury cazimi, could be seen as positive and might “pump the market.” However, they also noted that the “transit of Mars in Scorpio generally hasn’t been that good for BTC,” although the exact implications of this statement are somewhat unclear.
