After nearly eight hours of negotiation, the Munchables hacker, identified as one of the developers, had a change of heart and returned $62.8 million worth of Ether stolen in an exploit without demanding any ransom.
On March 26, around 9:30 pm UTC, Munchables, an Ethereum-based NFT game, reported a hack that drained over 17,400 ETH from the GameFi app. Munchables, along with blockchain investigators such as PeckShield and ZachXBT, began tracking the stolen funds to intercept them.
The exploit was traced back to a North Korean developer hired by Munchables, known by the alias “Werewolves0943.” Eventually, it was revealed that the hacker was one of the developers from the Munchables team.
After an hour of negotiations, the former developer agreed to return the hacked funds. Munchables confirmed the return of the stolen funds and appreciated the developer’s cooperation in an official statement.
Pacman, the creator of the Blast blockchain, expressed gratitude to ZachXBT for support and announced the return of all funds without any ransom. Pacman will collaborate with the Munchables team to redistribute the recovered funds.
Victims of the hack are advised to follow communications only from official sources to avoid falling for refund scams.
The exploit occurred shortly after a hacker stole approximately $24,000 from four DeFi aggregator ParaSwap addresses. With the assistance of white hat hackers, ParaSwap managed to recover the funds and began refunding affected users.
ParaSwap revealed that 386 addresses were affected by the vulnerability, with 213 addresses yet to revoke allowances for the flawed contract as of March 25.
