Anurag Arjun, co-founder of Avail and previously Polygon, highlights the necessity of neutral third-party infrastructure to enhance the user experience and streamline the Ethereum layer-2 rollup ecosystem. Arjun discussed this in an interview with Cointelegraph during the ETHGlobal conference in London.
Arjun explains that the team at Polygon shifted focus towards aligning with Ethereum’s rollup-centric roadmap, necessitating the development of new infrastructure. This led to the creation of Avail within Polygon in 2020, aiming to address scalable data availability for rollups.
Arjun’s goal with Avail is to establish a rollup-agnostic platform that supports major rollup protocols like StarkWare, zkSync, Arbitrum, and Optimism. Avail implements data sampling technology, similar to Ethereum’s sharding roadmap, to enable efficient verification of rollups.
Arjun acknowledges the fragmented user experience in Ethereum’s current rollup ecosystem, where users must switch between different rollups for various transactions. Avail seeks to resolve this fragmentation by aggregating proofs generated by independent rollups into a unified ecosystem.
The ultimate aim is to create a cohesive rollup ecosystem where users on different rollups can seamlessly interact. This requires a neutral third party to coordinate integration between various rollups, similar to how apps on the internet communicate with different cloud services.
Avail Nexus, similar to Polygon’s Aggregation layer, facilitates integration between rollups by aggregating proofs created by different rollups. This coordinated rollup approach fosters ecosystem-wide collaboration rather than catering to a single ecosystem.
Arjun highlights Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s recent question about who will build the infrastructure to unite rollups. He emphasizes the need for either the Ethereum Foundation or a neutral third party to take on this role.
Arjun’s insights underscore the importance of neutral infrastructure in enhancing Ethereum’s layer-2 rollup ecosystem. By fostering collaboration and streamlining user experience, initiatives like Avail aim to drive the ecosystem forward in line with Ethereum’s rollup-enabled functionality.
