Originally a blockchain inspired by memes and creativity, Dogecoin has recently taken an innovative leap by incorporating the iconic 90s first-person shooter game, Doom. This integration was achieved when a developer, known as “Mini Doge,” utilized the Dogecoin Ordinals protocol, also referred to as “Doginals,” to inscribe the game onto the Dogecoin blockchain.
The act of embedding Doom into the Dogecoin network allows anyone to play this classic game on both computers and mobile devices through a specific inscription link. Released in 1993, Doom gained massive popularity and is now celebrated on its 30th anniversary through this unique blockchain tribute. The version inscribed contains nine levels that are legally permissible for publication.
Initially introduced on the Bitcoin network, the Ordinals protocol extended to Litecoin following a challenge issued by an anonymous Twitter user, Indigo Nakamoto. This challenge, offering a reward in Litecoin, prompted the integration of Ordinals into the Litecoin network. Subsequently, Doge Labs pioneered the protocol’s deployment on Dogecoin, enabling the inscription of various digital formats, including images, videos, and audio, on these blockchains.
The Dogecoin network experienced a surge in activity, recording 1.2 million transactions in 24 hours, largely attributed to the Ordinals protocol’s introduction. Prior to Doom’s incorporation into Dogecoin, developers had inscribed a classic game emulator on the Bitcoin blockchain, highlighting the potential of these platforms in preserving digital culture. Ninjalerts CEO Trevor Owens emphasized the significance of preserving classic video games, considered endangered cultural digital artifacts, and suggested Bitcoin as an ideal platform for such preservation.
