Amazon has unveiled “Amazon Q,” its new AI-powered assistant designed for business applications, as announced by Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Nov. 28. This chatbot is engineered to facilitate conversations, problem-solving, content generation, insights acquisition, and integration with a company’s various internal systems, including information repositories, code, data, and enterprise systems.
Amazon Q is a key component of Amazon’s strategy to embed generative AI technology across its range of products, targeting both consumer and private sector applications. The company envisions this tool as a valuable asset for employees, aiming to enhance efficiency in tasks, expedite decision-making and problem-solving processes, and foster creativity and innovation in the workplace.
AWS CEO Adam Selipsky, in a Nov. 28 interview with CNBC, highlighted that Amazon Q would be particularly beneficial for employees in sectors such as human resources, legal, product management, design, manufacturing, and operations. AWS counts major firms like Vanguard, Deloitte, Samsung, Verizon, and Disney among its largest clients, whose employees could potentially utilize this AI chatbot once a more comprehensive version is available.
Currently, Amazon Q is in a preview phase and is only accessible in Oregon and northern Virginia in the United States.
It’s important to note that Amazon Q is distinct from Q*, a project by OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT. Recently, OpenAI faced controversy when its founder and CEO Sam Altman was briefly dismissed before being reinstated.
Amazon has shown significant interest in AI development, investing approximately $4 billion in Anthropic, the creators of the Claude 2 chatbot. Notably, Anthropic relies heavily on AWS for its computational needs.
Amazon’s launch of Q comes amidst similar initiatives by its competitors. Earlier in 2023, Google and Meta introduced their AI chatbots, Google Bard and LLaMA, respectively. Meanwhile, Microsoft has made a substantial investment of around $13 billion in OpenAI.
