German automotive giant Volkswagen has unveiled plans to incorporate OpenAI’s chatbot ChatGPT into its vehicles as early as mid-2024.
At the CES 2024 trade show in Las Vegas on January 9th, Volkswagen showcased cars equipped with voice assistants powered by ChatGPT. These vehicles are set to be launched in North America and Europe by the second quarter of 2024.
ChatGPT will enhance Volkswagen’s built-in voice assistant, enabling it to engage in interactive conversations with passengers. Most notably, the Volkswagen assistant will be capable of understanding and responding to unconventional commands. For instance, it can adjust the temperature in response to a statement like “I’m feeling cold.”
Volkswagen’s ChatGPT-powered voice assistant will also be able to provide directions to the nearest Indian restaurant when prompted with requests like “I want butter chicken.”
Kai Gruenitz, a board member for technical development at the Volkswagen brand, highlighted that the ChatGPT service can be utilized to control various car functions using voice commands, eliminating the need to press physical buttons. He stated, “Our customers don’t want to manually adjust their seats; they want to use speech dialogue systems. I think what our customers are really looking for is seamless, intuitive usage of their car.”
This voice command feature will also extend to popular third-party services, enabling users to interact with platforms like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto without relying on physical buttons. While Volkswagen claims to be the first volume manufacturer to introduce AI voice assistants as a standard feature, competitors such as General Motors and Mercedes-Benz have previously explored the integration of ChatGPT.
Volkswagen collaborated with the American software company Cerence to develop this integrated ChatGPT voice service.
