OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has refuted claims that the company is on the verge of launching a new iteration of its ChatGPT model, dubbed GPT-4.5.
Speculation was fueled by a supposedly “leaked” screenshot circulating on social media, including platform X on December 14. This image presented a description of “GPT 4.5,” stating:
“This advanced model offers multi-modal capabilities in language, audio, vision, video, and 3D, combined with intricate reasoning and cross-modal comprehension.”
However, doubts about the authenticity of this screenshot quickly surfaced. A Reddit post on r/OpenAI, possibly the origin of this “leak,” was uploaded around 10:30 am UTC on December 14 and subsequently removed by moderators. Several comments criticized the original poster for disseminating a “fake” leak. Bindu Reddy, CEO of Abacus.AI, also expressed skepticism, retracting her initial share of the screenshot after just 25 minutes, tweeting: “The leaked GPT4.5 pricing is almost certainly fake! The internet is expressing its own desires.”
Reddy pointed out several inaccuracies in the screenshot’s details.
Later, Sam Altman confirmed on platform X that the “leak” was indeed fabricated. It remains unclear whether OpenAI will actually release GPT-4.5 or skip directly to GPT-5. The forthcoming model would follow GPT-4, which was launched on March 14, 2023.
Following the June 2020 release of GPT-3, it took two years for GPT-3.5 to emerge in March 2022. Meanwhile, OpenAI has already initiated work on GPT-5. In July, the company filed a trademark application for GPT5, covering AI-based software for human speech and text processing, audio-to-text conversion, and voice and speech recognition.
In a November interview with the Financial Times, Sam Altman mentioned that OpenAI is developing GPT-5, though he did not provide a specific timeline for its release.
