Consultancy firm CVL Economics suggests that generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) will result in more job losses in the film and animation industry compared to other sectors.
Based on a survey of 300 leaders from six entertainment industries, including c-suite executives, senior executives, and mid-level managers, CVL Economics conducted research between November 17 and December 22, 2023. The report reveals that 75% of survey respondents reported that Gen AI tools, software, and models have led to the elimination, reduction, or consolidation of jobs within their business division.
Gen AI can create diverse content such as images, text, and music without explicit programming. It employs machine learning to understand and replicate patterns from existing data.
According to the report, 55% of leaders expect sound designers to be the most affected in the next three years. Over 40% believe that music editors, audio technicians, and sound engineers are vulnerable, while approximately 33% anticipate impacts on songwriters, composers, and studio engineers.
In July 2023, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) initiated a strike due to concerns about AI advancements potentially affecting job roles and security. Companies were using content by writers to train Gen AI programs and create digital replicas and characters based on actors’ likenesses. Striking workers were concerned about the potential replacement of their roles by Gen AI technology.
Despite favorable contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, concerns persist among WGA and SAG-AFTRA members about the uncertain impact of Gen AI on the film, television, and entertainment sectors.
The report indicates that 47% of business leaders believe that Gen AI will effectively generate 3D assets and realistic sound design for film, television, and video games over the next three years. Additionally, 44% believe Gen AI could generate realistic foreign language dubbing for film or television dialogue, and 39% anticipate Gen AI generating music mixes and masters by 2026.
CVL Economics suggests that further job cuts are expected in the coming months, with companies like Riot Games, Unity Software, Amazon MGM Studios, Pixar, and Universal Music Group having already announced layoffs in the early weeks of 2024.
