An online hacker asserts they have access to a law enforcement request account named “KodexGlobal,” which facilitates the subpoenaing of user information from various firms, including Coinbase, Binance, Chainlink, and others.
According to cybercrime solutions provider Hudson Rock, the hacker is offering access to the law enforcement request system account on BreachForums for a price of $5,000 or $300 per emergency data request (EDR). The hacker claims to be able to make EDRs for services such as LinkedIn, Discord, Tinder, Binance, Coinbase, Chainlink, SendGrid, and more.
A Binance spokesperson clarified that the blog’s findings do not indicate a breach of Binance’s system. They suspect that the issue may involve compromised law enforcement accounts. Binance emphasized its commitment to safeguarding user data through thorough documentation processes and continuous monitoring to prevent unauthorized access.
KodexGlobal serves as a platform for secure communication between law enforcement agencies and regulators. Hackers with access to the platform could request personal data about a company’s users by falsely claiming legal reasons for the request. Such misuse could lead to identity theft, extortion, and financial losses, particularly for users holding cryptocurrency assets.
According to Hudson Rock, the hacker likely gained access to law enforcement systems by exploiting credentials acquired from Infostealer Infections. These credentials are often obtained from compromised computers owned by law enforcement officers.
In December 2023, Hudson Rock reported that a hacker was attempting to sell access to Binance’s law enforcement portal through KodexGlobal. The firm posted a screenshot showing compromised credentials from law enforcement officers in Taiwan, Uganda, and the Philippines. However, it did not confirm any breaches of Binance’s systems, user data, or cryptocurrency thefts.
KodexGlobal had previously dismissed such claims as a “scam,” though Binance reportedly acknowledged being aware of “such access,” according to Hudson Rock.
