Axel Springer, a leading European media conglomerate, announced on December 13 via its blog that it is partnering with OpenAI to enhance journalism with the AI tool ChatGPT. This collaboration aims to improve ChatGPT’s training using content from Axel Springer’s media outlets, striving for a more accurate and current user experience, and enhancing transparency by attributing and linking to full articles.
Generative AI chatbots, including ChatGPT, have faced challenges with factual accuracy, sometimes producing false or misleading information, a phenomenon often termed as “hallucinations.” OpenAI acknowledged these issues and announced initiatives to mitigate AI hallucinations in a June post on its website.
AI hallucinations are instances where AI systems generate information that is factually incorrect, misleading, or not supported by real-world data. These can include creating false information, inventing non-existent events or people, or providing inaccurate details about specific topics.
The intersection of AI and journalism raises concerns about transparency and the spread of misinformation. An Ipsos Global study in October found that a significant portion of the public in North America and globally is worried that AI might worsen misinformation issues, with many believing it could facilitate the creation of convincing fake news.
Through its partnership with OpenAI, Axel Springer aims to enable ChatGPT users to generate summaries from content across its media brands, such as Politico, Business Insider, Bild, and Die Welt. This collaboration also explores the potential of AI in combating misinformation, as evidenced by developments like AI Fact Checker and Microsoft’s integration of GPT-4 into its Edge browser.
In response to these challenges, the Associated Press has issued guidelines to limit the use of generative AI in news reporting, underscoring the need for human oversight in journalism.
Addressing the issue of AI hallucinations, a team from the University of Science and Technology of China and Tencent’s YouTu Lab developed a tool in October to help combat this problem in AI models. This development reflects the ongoing efforts to enhance the reliability and trustworthiness of AI-generated content in various fields, including journalism.
