The landscape of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is evolving rapidly, with open-source AI models gaining ground on their centralized counterparts. Centralized AI models, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini Ultra, have been market leaders due to their robust performance. These models are backed by centralized cloud infrastructure and have been somewhat exclusive in terms of public access to their data sources and training methodologies.
However, recent research from ARK Invest, led by Cathy Wood, indicates a shift in this dynamic. The team suggests that open-source AI models could potentially surpass the performance of centralized models by 2024. This prediction is based on the significant progress observed in open-source AI since 2022. Some open-source models have already started to show performance on par with, or even superior to, private models.
In 2023, notable open-source AI models like Yi 34B, Falcon 180B, and Mixtral 8x7B have emerged as strong competitors. ARK Invest researcher Jozef Soja pointed out that Mixtral, for instance, outperformed GPT 3.5 in terms of absolute log error of performance on a massive multitask language understanding benchmark, although GPT-4 remains significantly ahead.
Meta’s foundational model, LLaMA, also demonstrated considerable improvements in its 2023 iterations. The push for enhanced performance in open-source AI models is driven by the goal of democratizing access to generative AI technologies, as emphasized by AI engineer Brian Roemmele.
To gauge the current state of AI capabilities, Cointelegraph conducted a comparative analysis using the free versions of Google’s Gemini (via Bard) and OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4. The test involved asking both AI models several questions about cryptocurrencies. Interestingly, both AI models exhibited a cautious approach when addressing investment advice, suggesting users seek professional financial advice for personalized guidance. While their responses shared common themes, there were variations in the specifics of the information provided.
This trend towards open-source AI models gaining traction highlights the increasing competition in the AI field and the potential for more accessible and diverse AI technologies in the near future.
