China aims to construct factories for developing artificial intelligence (AI) chips and creating particle accelerators, as reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP). This initiative is intended to solidify China’s position in the global semiconductor arena.
The use of particle accelerators will innovate the production of a unique laser source. The SCMP states that the electron beam from the accelerator will be converted into a high-quality light source required for on-site AI semiconductor chip production.
A group of scientists from Tsinghua University is reportedly consulting with officials in the Xiongan New Area to choose a suitable location for the factory. Local experts believe this move could potentially bypass the existing sanctions imposed by the United States.
In the chip manufacturing process, particle accelerators are anticipated to replace lithography machines for developing advanced AI systems. Currently, the Netherlands-based company Advanced Semiconductor Materials Lithography is the sole holder of the technology for such machinery. The U.S. prohibition on this company, similar to its restrictions on Nvidia, prevents it from selling its high-end machines to the Chinese market.
In response to these sanctions, China has been exploring alternative methods for AI systems development. Despite these constraints, Chinese companies have launched new AI systems following the implementation of the country’s significant AI legislation. For example, on September 7, Tencent introduced a competitor to ChatGPT in the Chinese market.
Conversely, the U.S. is strengthening its hold on the AI manufacturing industry, sealing deals in Vietnam centered on AI chips and technology. This move reflects the U.S.’s concern over China leading AI development, a sentiment shared by European regulators who are reassessing their export controls and restrictions regarding China.
