Several sub-communities on Reddit, including popular crypto-related subreddits, have collectively decided to go private for 48 hours as a protest against new company policies that restrict the use of third-party applications. Reddit recently announced plans to modify its Reddit Data API, which allows developers to create tools and utilities for moderation and other activities.
This move by Reddit has garnered negative reactions from various subreddits, as it directly affects the community’s ability to create and utilize third-party tools that are commonly used for content moderation and interaction. As a result, these communities have chosen to go private or operate in read-only mode from June 12 to 14 in order to protest against the upcoming changes. Notably, major crypto communities such as r/Bitcoin, r/CryptoCurrency, and r/cardano are participating in this protest.
While around 3,500 subreddits were initially estimated to become inaccessible, the number could increase if more communities join the revolt. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has expressed understanding for the community’s actions, stating that the platform respects the need for users and communities to take action to address their concerns, even if it means going private.
In an effort to reduce reliance on third-party moderator tools, Reddit plans to launch mobile moderator tools for its iOS and Android apps in the coming months. However, this move has been met with resistance from the affected communities.
Despite the ongoing backlash, Reddit has achieved a notable milestone in terms of its collectible avatars. The platform has amassed 10 million holders of its collectible avatars within a year of launching Reddit NFTs. The collectible avatar marketplace was launched on the Ethereum layer-2 scaling network Polygon, enabling independent artists and Redditors to create customizable non-fungible token collections.
In summary, the Reddit community, including crypto-related subreddits, has taken collective action by going private to protest against Reddit’s new policies limiting the use of third-party applications. While Reddit’s CEO has acknowledged the need for such actions, the platform is moving forward with its plans to introduce mobile moderator tools. Meanwhile, Reddit has achieved significant success with its collectible avatars on the Ethereum-based Reddit NFT marketplace.
