Crypto users on social media have raised concerns about a new wave of phishing emails linked to the content creator platform Patreon. Scammers have been reportedly signing up crypto users’ email addresses on Patreon, subsequently enrolling them in malicious emails from fake crypto projects.
The phishing attempts, which began surfacing around January 23, involve fake airdrop offers from entities impersonating well-known crypto projects like Chainlink, Solana, Manta Network, and Sui. These fraudulent emails aim to access and potentially compromise users’ cryptocurrency wallets.
Patreon Support acknowledged the issue in a post on January 25, stating that they had identified and resolved a problem related to email verification and false claims by a crypto account posing as a Patreon creator. The platform has been addressing affected accounts and has reportedly fixed the underlying issue.
Despite Patreon’s efforts, several users on platforms like Reddit have continued to report receiving scam emails. These ongoing reports suggest that while Patreon has taken steps to mitigate the issue, the threat may not be entirely neutralized.
The broader context of phishing in the cryptocurrency sector is significant, with over 324,000 crypto users falling victim to such scams in 2023, leading to substantial financial losses.
This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks associated with phishing scams in the cryptocurrency world. Both users and platforms must remain alert and proactive in implementing security measures to safeguard against such fraudulent activities. As the crypto space continues to evolve, so too do the tactics of scammers, making continuous vigilance and education essential for the community.
