The creators of the dog-themed cryptocurrency Shiba Inu (SHIB), currently valued at $0.000010, are seeking to establish a “.shib” domain within the standard internet domain name system (DNS).
In a recent post on X (previously known as Twitter) dated December 19, the internet domain company D3 announced its collaboration with @ShibToken to secure the .shib Top-Level Domain (TLD). D3 specializes in innovative domains that bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3. As per D3’s website, existing Web3 domains like “.crypto” and “.eth” are incompatible with common internet tools such as web browsers and email, as they do not function on the DNS. Conversely, traditional Web2 domains like “.com” and “.net” are DNS-compatible but do not integrate seamlessly with Web3 applications like wallets and digital identity systems.
If successful, Shiba Inu coin holders could create email addresses ending in “.shib”, which would work with standard email platforms, according to D3. The application for this domain will be submitted to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a U.S.-based nonprofit responsible for managing internet identifiers. Additionally, D3 plans to introduce “name tokens” for SHIB users, facilitating the transfer of digital assets across various blockchains without the need for complex wallet addresses.
Despite this development, SHIB’s value remained largely unaffected, dropping slightly by less than 1% following the announcement, as reported by CoinGecko.
In related news, Shiba Inu’s new layer-2 blockchain, Shibarium, garnered 1 million users by September. Although currently in a private phase, the Shiba Inu team aims to make it publicly accessible in the near future.
