The World Economic Forum (WEF) reports that an increasing number of manufacturing firms in the United States are turning to the industrial metaverse to address complex challenges in the production cycle.
According to the report published on March 12, 92% of US manufacturing executives are exploring ways to integrate the metaverse into their operations. Survey data from 100 major companies across ten industries revealed that executives are considering an average of six different use cases.
The COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the need for the industrial sector to enhance its capabilities. Manufacturing companies are seeking ways to accelerate production cycles, improve efficiency, and reduce costs through predictive forecasting.
Companies are leveraging digital twin technology, using virtual models to represent physical objects. For instance, Amazon employs NVIDIA Omniverse to enhance warehouse design and robot workstations, while Mercedes Benz utilizes the platform for designing manufacturing assembly facilities.
The industrial metaverse finds application across various stages of the product life cycle, including pre-production, production, and post-production. Tasks such as product design, process simulations, plant management, and quality assurance benefit from metaverse integration.
Industries at the forefront of industrial metaverse adoption include automotive, energy, software, platforms, aerospace, and defense. These sectors are leading in investment and activity related to metaverse implementation.
Despite its benefits, some companies hesitate to invest further in the industrial metaverse due to the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI). Additionally, concerns have been raised about the potential negative impact of the metaverse on industries like the creative arts sector.
Researchers in the United Kingdom stress the importance of addressing IP issues in the metaverse, particularly concerning blockchain’s role in managing and updating IP rights. Flexibility in IP governance is crucial to ensure fair and effective utilization of the metaverse.
