The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the organization responsible for overseeing international soccer competitions, is set to release its own non-fungible token (NFT) collection in anticipation of the 2023 Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia. This initiative is being undertaken in partnership with blockchain company Modex.
As per the announcement on December 11, the first series of 100 NFTs will be launched on December 15, offering the opportunity to win tickets to the FIFA World Cup 2026 final. Additionally, 900 other digital collectibles will be released on the Polygon network and OpenSea platform this month. These collectibles will include memorable moments from the tournament and digital versions of memorabilia.
The FIFA Club World Cup, starting on December 12 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, will feature seven of the world’s top football teams, including the champions from FIFA’s six confederations. These NFTs will be accessible on FIFA’s dedicated platform, FIFA+ Collect, which was introduced in September 2022 and is powered by Algorand.
Francesco Abbate, CEO of Modex, expressed enthusiasm about the project, noting that digital collectibles offer new ways for fans to engage with their favorite players, teams, and the sport itself. He stated that Modex is proud to assist FIFA in achieving this objective.
Since its launch, the FIFA+ Collect platform has hosted 11 NFT drops, resulting in the minting of 909,255 digital collectibles and attracting 16,448 holders. The platform has witnessed a trading volume of $2.4 million across both primary and secondary NFT markets. However, it’s important to note that the reported mint volume might be somewhat misleading. According to FIFA+ Collect Info, the platform cannot differentiate between packs obtained for free through challenges and those purchased with USDC.
