SuperBowl LIV: Chiefs vs 49ers Go Head-to-Head in Miami

It’s that time of the year when the 2 conference champions of the NFL go head-to-head in the single greatest sporting event in the United States: the Super Bowl.

On February 2, 2020, the 54th Super Bowl will be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. While it’s the 54th Super Bowl, it is the 50th modern-era NFL championship game, the first being played in 1970 when the merger between the NFL and the AFL was completed. It is also the culmination of a landmark 100th Season of the National Football League, and it promises to be a spectacular affair.

The Road to Super Bowl 2020

Super Bowl LIV is the final championship game of the 2019 NFL season. It kicked off on September 5, 2019, and concluded the 17th and final week of the regular season on December 29, 2019. The first game ended with the Green Bay Packers sending the Chicago Bears packing, while the last game of the season saw the San Francisco 49ers defeating the Seattle Seahawks.

The Playoffs

According to the current playoff system, the 4 divisional winners in both the AFC and the NFC are seeded 1-4, according to their won-lost-tie record in the regular season. 2 non-division winners with the best regular season records from each conference are seeded 5 and 6 and are called the “Wild Cards”.

From the table above, you can see that the Baltimore Ravens, the Kansas City Chiefs, the New England Patriots, and the Houston Texans from the AFC and the San Francisco 49ers, the Green Bay Packers, the New Orleans Saints, and the Philadelphia Eagles from the NFC were the top 4 seeds going into the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills and the Tennessee Titans from the AFC and the Seattle Seahawks and the Minnesota Vikings from the NFC were the wild cards.

Playoff Bracket

For the first time since the 2010-2011 season, the New England Patriots didn’t play the AFC Championship Game, and for the first time since the 2015-2016 season, the Tom Brady-led Patriots didn’t make it to the Super Bowl, getting eliminated in the Wild Card Playoff against the Tennessee Titans.

The Patriots had made it to the Super Bowl for 3 consecutive seasons from 2016 to 2018, winning Super Bowl 2017 and Super Bowl 2019, tying the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl Championships with 6.

For the first time since the 2015-2016 playoffs, both AFC wild card games were scheduled for the Saturday, and both NFC wild card games were scheduled for the Sunday

Who Will Play in the Super Bowl 2020?

As we can see from the bracket, the San Francisco 49ers won the National Football Conference Championship and the Kansas City Chiefs won the American Football Conference Championships on January 19 to advance to the Super Bowl.

The Finalists

With two teams led by young, extraordinarily talented quarterbacks taking on each other, Super Bowl LIV promises to be one of the best Super Bowl games of the last few years.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers’ rise to the top was surprising, considering the fact that they hadn’t recorded a winning record since the 2013 season. They finished the 2018 season with a record of 4-12, so their NFC-best record of 13-3 this season was unprecedented.

The secret to their successful season was their quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and their excellent defensive line composed of DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, Fred Warner, and Richard Sherman. Jimmy Garoppolo’s claim to fame was being Tom Brady’s backup at the New England Patriots before the 49ers picked him up in 2017.

This is the 49ers’ seventh Super Bowl appearance and first since 2013 when they lost to the Baltimore Ravens. They are currently tied with the Dallas Cowboys at 5 Super Bowls, and a win here would make them the most successful team in the NFC while also tying them with the Patriots and Steelers at 6.

Kansas City Chiefs

KC finished the season with a 12-4 record and their fourth straight American Football Conference West title. Their forces were marshaled by the talented 24-year old quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was the NFL MVP last year and led them to their 3rd Super Bowl this year with 4,031 yards, 26 touchdowns, and only 5 interceptions.

The Chiefs bagged the #2 seed in the playoffs, thanks to an unprecedented defeat of the Patriots by the lowly Miami Dolphins in Week 17. If KC wins, this would be their 2nd Super Bowl victory.

The Venue: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida

The Hard Rock Stadium is a multipurpose sports stadium and the home stadium of the Miami Dolphins in the NFL and Miami Hurricanes college football team. It’s the host of the Orange Bowl every year.

This location has hosted five Super Bowls previously: XXIII between the Cincinnati Bengals and the 49ers, XXIX between the San Diego Chargers and the 49ers, XXXIII between the Denver Broncos and the Atlanta Falcons, XLI between the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears, and XLIV between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts. This will be the 11th Super Bowl hosted by the South Florida region and the 6th hosted in Miami Gardens.

The other sports that are played or have been played at this venue include tennis, basketball, baseball, and wrestling.

Who's the Halftime Show at the Super Bowl?

The Super Bowl LIV halftime performance is set to be co-headlined by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. Pitbull, Beyonce, Ja Rule, and Wyclef Jean are set to make surprise appearances too.

The pre-game show will feature Demi Lovato singing “The Star-Spangled Banner”.

When Is The Super Bowl LIV?

The big game is set to be played on Feb 2, 2020, at 6.30 p.m. EST (11.30 p.m. UTC).

Who Has the Most Super Bowl Rings?

Bill Belichick has the most number of rings with 8: two as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants and six as head coach of the New England Patriots. Tom Brady of the New England Patriots has the most rings as a player in NFL history, winning 6. He overtook Charles Haley (who has 5) last year when the Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams in the 2019 Super Bowl.

How Many NFL Teams Have Never Won a Super Bowl?

12 franchises have never won the Super Bowl: the Cincinnati Bengals, the Buffalo Bills, the Arizona Cardinals, the Cleveland Browns, the San Diego Chargers/Los Angeles Chargers, the Atlanta Falcons, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Detroit Lions, the Carolina Panthers, the Houston Texans, the Tennessee Titans, and the Minnesota Vikings.

The Patriots and Steelers have won it six times, the Cowboys and 49ers have won it five times, the Packers and Giants have won it four times, the Broncos, Raiders, and Redskins have won it three times, the Dolphins, Colts, and Ravens have won it twice, while the Rams, Seahawks, Eagles, Chiefs, Bears, Jets, Buccaneers, and New Orleans Saints have all won it once.
