Google is contemplating the introduction of premium features powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI) in its search engine, potentially marking the first time a core Google product would be placed behind a paywall.
According to a Financial Times report on April 3, Google is considering various options, including integrating AI-powered search features into its existing premium subscription services, such as the Gemini AI assistant in Gmail and Docs.
While Google primarily relies on advertising for monetization, the company is exploring new avenues to enhance its revenue streams. While traditional search engine functionalities will remain free, premium subscribers may access additional AI-driven search features.
Despite ongoing trials of AI-driven search tools, integration into the primary search engine has been delayed due to the experimental nature of the “search generative experience.” However, the demand for AI queries requires substantial computing power, potentially impacting profitability.
A spokesperson from Google clarified that the company currently has no plans for an ad-free search experience. Instead, Google aims to continue building premium capabilities and services to enhance its subscription offerings across various products.
In February, Google introduced a new paid tier to its consumer subscription service, Google One AI Premium, offering access to advanced AI models like Gemini. This move highlights Google’s commitment to expanding its premium offerings amidst increasing competition in the AI sector.
