The legal team representing billionaire entrepreneur George Bachiashvili has issued a statement denying the criminal charges filed against him by the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia. The charges allege that Bachiashvili misappropriated Bitcoin worth $39 million and engaged in money laundering.
The prosecutor’s office claims that in 2015, Bachiashvili was involved in Bitcoin mining with an investor who expected the profits to be divided based on the invested funds. They allege that Bachiashvili generated a profit of 8,253.13 BTC in 2017, equivalent to around $39 million at the time, but failed to pay the appropriate amount to the investor. The current value of the alleged BTC profit is nearly $250 million.
Furthermore, the office accuses Bachiashvili of concealing the details of the misappropriated crypto and attempting to transfer the funds to different wallets for financial operations.
In response, Robert Amsterdam, the founding partner of Amsterdam & Partners LLP representing Bachiashvili, issued a statement asserting that the charges are not based on factual findings or a serious investigation but rather motivated by politics. Amsterdam considers the charges a negative signal for the rule of law and investment, and the legal team intends to fight the accusations and uncover the truth.
Amsterdam also criticizes the abuse of the state apparatus as a means of theft and alleges that Bachiashvili is being targeted due to his political beliefs. He describes the charges as an embarrassment for the country and emphasizes their commitment to defending Bachiashvili through all available measures, both domestically and internationally.
