Telecoms infrastructure firm Nokia is gearing up for anticipated spikes in network demand driven by advancements in the metaverse, Web3, and artificial intelligence (AI), outlining plans to address this surge by 2030.
Nokia’s Technology Strategy 2030 report projects a significant 22%–25% increase in network demand from 2022 to 2030, primarily fueled by the mainstream adoption of generative AI and virtual reality devices, according to Federico Guillén, president of network infrastructure at Nokia.
To meet this rising demand, Nokia plans to make substantial investments in its portfolio of network equipment and services over the coming years. One of the key areas of focus will be the Internet of Value, encompassing decentralization, blockchain, and smart contracts. Nokia also aims to capitalize on the metaverse trend, concentrating on human augmentation, spatial computing, and split processing.
Nokia’s strategy revolves around catering to six ecosystems, including AI, Industry 5.0, Application Programming Interface (API) economy, Cloud continuum, and the aforementioned Internet of Value and metaverse.
In 2022, Nokia established two labs dedicated to studying the metaverse and its underlying technologies. Subsequently, in 2023, the company embarked on various industrial and large-scale metaverse initiatives to explore its potential applications.
Nokia has developed a future network architecture leveraging network digital twin technology, which simulates physical objects for prototyping and testing purposes. Notably, in South Australia, Nokia utilized the metaverse to potentially aid Cessna aircraft technicians at remote airports through augmented reality instructions.
In Finland, researchers experimented with digital twins known as “Metahumans” to demonstrate the metaverse’s potential in gamifying employee management. These digital twins extend beyond visual representation to include internal traits such as emotions and cognitive states, paving the way for innovative approaches to workforce optimization.
Digital twins generated from industrial simulations offer valuable insights for live teams, enabling the development of optimized work strategies, enhanced safety measures, and improved performance and output based on data-driven analysis.
